What If The Excavator Doesn't Start?

Aug 22, 2022

You may encounter various faults when driving the excavator. I think the most common one is that it can't start. So what are the reasons for the ignition failure and what are the ways to troubleshoot these faults? I'll explain it in detail for you today.

Circuit

There are many reasons why the excavator can't start. The most common reason for the failure of the excavator is the circuit. Then how to judge that the circuit causes the ignition failure?

The failure of ignition caused by circuit failure is mainly manifested in that the ignition switch does not respond or the starting motor speed is too low, and the feeling of powerlessness can be felt. If these two phenomena can not be ignited, it can be roughly determined that the starting circuit is faulty. Then, how to troubleshoot?

Check the battery pile head

The circuit inspection can start from the source. First, check the battery pile head, clean the battery pile head, and then tighten the screw of the pile head. The reason why the battery pile head failed to ignite several times before is that the battery pile head was loose, resulting in poor contact and insufficient voltage. If possible, the owner can measure the battery voltage with a multimeter.

If there is no fault in the battery, the next step is to check the line. Follow the line of the battery and observe whether there is a broken line or a loose connector.

Check relay box fuse box

Next, start to check the starting relay and fuse box, open the relay box to check whether the connector is loose, and then open the fuse box to check whether the fuse of the starting circuit is burnt out.

Of course, the failure of the starting motor or generator can also lead to failure of ignition. Among them, the failure of the generator will cause the generator to fail to generate power normally and the battery power cannot be replenished, resulting in low speed or no rotation of the starting motor.

Oil circuit

In addition to the circuit, the oil circuit is also a common cause of ignition failure. Then, how to judge whether the failure of the oil circuit causes the ignition failure?

If the starting motor can be heard to rotate forcefully when the starting key is turned off, and there is no abnormal mechanical friction sound of the engine, it can be roughly determined as the cause of the oil circuit. The inspection of the oil circuit of the direct injection vehicle is simpler than that of the electric circuit, but it is more complicated for some electronically controlled high-pressure common rail engines. You can generally check from the following steps.

Check whether there is enough fuel

First of all, check whether there is oil in the fuel tank. You may think this step is too incredible, but in fact, there are not a few owners who cannot start the engine because the fuel tank is empty.

A car with a good oil gauge can observe the fuel volume of the fuel tank through the oil gauge. However, the Xiaobian suggests that it is better to check whether there is enough fuel in the fuel tank through the oil level gauge or by opening the fuel tank cover at this time. After all, the oil gauge will also fail.

Water discharge of oil-water separator

After it is determined that there is enough diesel fuel for ignition in the fuel tank, the next step is the oil-water separator. In fact, many engine owners do not have the habit of discharging water to the oil-water separator every day. If the quality of the oil used is not high, it may be unable to start due to too much water in the diesel. Generally, the oil-water separator has a red buoy. The density of this buoy is between diesel water, so it will float on the water surface and be at the level of diesel. When observing that the buoy of the oil-water separator is in the middle, it is necessary to timely unscrew the drain bolt at the bottom of the oil-water separator to drain the water. This is the same for each oil-water separator.

Engine exhaust air

After eliminating the cause of excessive moisture in the diesel oil, if it is still unable to catch fire, the next step is to check whether the diesel oil is mixed with air. First, find the location of the hand pump. The installation locations of the hand pumps of different brands of engines are different. Some are installed near the diesel pump, and some are equipped with an electronic oil pump, so it is not necessary to manually exhaust the air. At present, most of the hand pumps of excavators on sale are installed above the oil-water separator, Loosen the bleeder bolt next to the manual oil pump, press the manual oil pump with your hand until all the bleeder bolts are diesel, and then tighten the bleeder bolt to complete the air exhaust.

Generally, the vehicle can be started after checking the circuit and oil circuit. At this time, if the ignition still fails, mechanical reasons should be considered.

mechanical failure

If there is no problem in the circuit and oil circuit after inspection, it may be a mechanical fault caused by the engine.

Generally, the probability of mechanical failure of diesel engine is relatively low, but once mechanical failure occurs, the engine will be overhauled. The common mechanical failures of the engine include cylinder pulling, tile burning, cylinder tamping, etc. generally, the occurrence of mechanical failure of the engine is a precursor, such as the engine suddenly fails to operate in normal operation, or the engine always emits black smoke and makes abnormal noise during operation.

Overhaul engine

Most mechanical failures occur when the engine is working, and the probability of mechanical failure is low when the engine is cold started. In addition, the mechanical failure of the engine of the general excavator requires lifting the engine for disassembly and maintenance. It is recommended to find the after-sales department or professional engine maintenance personnel for maintenance.
