To avoid overheating engine andaccelerated wear of the engine components, perform the required dailymaintenance and any other periodic maintenace that is due.  Refer to the Operation and MaintenanceManual, "Maintenance Interval Schedule" for more information.Stop the engine according to theOperation and Manintenance Manual, Engine Stopping topic(OperationgSection).

Avoidinghot engine shutdowns will maximize turbocharger shaft and bearing life.

Stoppingthe engine immediately after it has been working under load can result inoverheating and accelerated wear of the engine components.  Avoid accelerating the engine prior toshutting it down. Remove the load from the engine; reduce the engine speed(rpm) to low idle, and allow the engine to idle for five minutes in order tocool the engine.

engineor an engine that has been serviced, make provisions to stop the engine if anoverspeed condition occurs.  This may beaccomplished by shutting off the fuel supply and/or the air supply to theengine.

Beforethe engine is started, perform the daily maintenance as follows:

1. coolingsystem coolant level-check

2.engine oil level-check

3.fuel filter and water separator-drain

4. engine air cleaner-inspect

5. walk-around inspection

coolingsystem. The following problems are related to cooling system failures:overheating, leakage of the water pump and plugged radiators or heatexchangers.  These failures can beavoided with correct cooling system maintenance.

Neveradd coolant to an overheated engine, engine damage can result; allow the engineto cool first.

Watertemperature regulator

The water temperature regulator failure in a partiallyopen position can cause engine overheating or overcooling; the watertemperature regulator failure in the fully closed position can cause seriousengine overheating. (If the water temperature regulator is not replaced  periodically as required, it will causeserious damages to the engine)

engine belts

If the engine belts are too loose, vibration will causeunnecessary wear on the belts and pulleys;loose belts my slip enough to causeoverheating. Therefore, the opreator must check the belt tension periodically.
